How to Pick Out a Murphy Bed Mattress

Which mattresses are compatible with a murphy bed? Here is a quick guide on finding one that will fit – and keep its shape.

How to Find the Right Murphy Bed Mattress

1. Choose Memory Foam
When you choose a murphy bed mattress, you want to make sure that its construction won’t ‘bunch’ after long periods of time standing upright. To do that, you’ll want to go with a memory foam mattress. While many innerspring mattresses will maintain their shape in a murphy bed, some won’t – and to be able to tell the difference, you’ll often have to carefully read the manufacturer’s description or contact the seller. Of course, the simpler route is to just go with memory foam, which, when it comes to maintaining shape, will always beat out innerspring, every time.

2. Consider Thickness
Secondly, you’ll want to make sure the mattress you choose actually fits in the murphy bed. Note that along with checking the width and depth, you’ll also want to pay particular attention to the height – or how thick the mattress is. Many murphy beds won’t take a mattress more than 12” thick; some will only take up to 6”. Always check the requirements of your murphy bed before making any decisions about the kind of mattress you will be placing in it.

3. Choose Based on Comfort Preference
Once you know that the mattress you choose will a) not lose shape, and b) fit in the bed, you can narrow your search by your comfort preferences. Memory foam and innerspring mattresses aren’t one-size-fits-all – they come in a range of firmness levels, along with custom features like motion separation and cooling tech. Choose the one that makes the most sense for your lifestyle, and if you can, try it out in the store before buying to see if it’s right for you.
